FAQ

First Visit - What to expect

The acupuncturist makes a diagnostic assessment that takes into account:

  • the patient's present and past symptoms and complaints (medical history)
  • environment (social and natural)
  • life-style (work and habits)
  • psychology (thoughts, emotions and relationships)
  • observation of facial and tongue colour
  • physical palpation of the body
  • pulse taking.

The session will end with your first treatment which will help the body start the detox process.

How do the needles feel

The needle feels like a small pinch followed by a sensation of numbness, ache, travelling warmth, tingling or heaviness around the area.

How will I feel after the treatment?

Response to treatment is individual: some people feel tired and some feel energized.

After six to twelve sessions there will be some subjective response to treatment: recovery from the main complaint or a more generalized sense of improvement, including alertness and tranquillity, restful sleep or better circulation.

For chronic problems the process is extended and the progress may be recognised more by hindsight, when people look back and remember how they felt before the treatment.

How many sessions do I NEED?

Duration and frequency of treatment vary, since each person is a unique riddle to be solved.

Some need only a few sessions, while others need weeks and months - this depends on the severity of the complaint, how long has the person had it.

A session lasts an hour and is scheduled every week.

As symptoms improve, fewer visits are required.

Why do I have bruises after cupping?

The marks left after cupping are not bruises.

The online Medicine.Net.com dictionary gives the following description of bruising: "A bruise is a traumatic injury which results in breakage of the local capillaries and leakage of red blood cells."

All skin marks that are a result of cupping therapy , however dark they may appear, are not painful.

There is no internal or external damage inflicted to the skin.

Capillaries do not leak as a result of injury or blow to the blood vessels.

How does acupuncture work?

When Qi and Blood stagnate, the process of regeneration deteriorates and this constitutes the basic condition underlying many forms of illness.

Acupuncture adjusts all the physiological processes of the organism, through activation of the homeostatic function of the autonomic nervous system.

Acupuncture is process of stirring up the Qi so the stasis is overcome, thereby restoring circulation, reducing swelling, alleviating pain and promoting healing.

BAA and BAF worked with Public Health England and the Office of National Statistics to raise the category of acupuncture from 3219 - the category of Health Associate, up to 2220 - the level of Osteopaths and Physiotherapists. All professional acupuncturists now belong in the category of Healthcare Professionals. This means that in the event of future Tiers of Lockdowns the clinic will be able to stay open.
